Pagebuilders are in fashion. Gutenberg is going to jump on the bandwagon. But what is the target group? The average user should not have too much freedom to build complex layouts in the editor. More often than not, they will ruin the design in no time. Designers who don’t have a clue of coding love mega-complex themes with their super-powerful pagebuilders. As a result, they make websites that are slow and very time-consuming to maintain. What is the good of this? Should the WP core support this? I don’t think so.
The classic WP editor has some major issues. However, the basic concept is good. Don’t mess it up! A customer needs a complex layout with several editable textareas? Fine, let a coder do this for him. He REALLY wants a drag and drop editor? Install a plugin.
