Mail is sent from SMTP username instead of “From Email” field

Sending mail doesn’t seem to work if I don’t use SMTP authentication, but when I do the mail comes from my SMTP username/email instead of the “From Email” I specify in the WP Mail Bank settings and the form (using gravity forms.) Is this the intended behavior and is there a way to send it from the “From Email” instead?
