This is, indeed, an amazing plugin. We once had a client who wanted to make a custom 404 error page that would also match their branding and strengthen their core story. Fortunately, we’ve been able to implement this plugin to most of our clients and we’re now focusing on getting it for our latest one at https://morningscore.io. While we haven’t seen any issues in Google rankings that we can attribute to 404s (one client had a huge problem with that), using this plugin is still a good way to manage such links and redirect them to useful pages so that the traffic is adequately spread. We see it also as a good practice to keep the site structure in order and enable an easy way of navigating for the search engine crawling bots.
