Error 500

I was using an old plugin version, but i recently decided to upgrade to the new 6.4.1 version. But after installing and activating it, my website displayed error 500. I had to go into cpanel to rename the plugin folder for my site to come back online. i am on wordpress version 4.9.17.

Is there a workaround?
