Also optimise for logged in administrators? – layout issue when logged in

This is not so much a request for help but more of an offering to others having same issue.

The last month or so I started noticing periodic front end layout issues with the sites I was working on. It seemed like all CSS was stripped out. If I clear my browser cache all would return to normal for a while. I may leave a tab working perfectly again only to open it later and the css was stripped out again. Clear browser cache again and the site would return normal.

I would ask clients if they had any issues – none. Clearing server-side caches made no difference.

After deactivating all browser extensions and deactivating plugins I finally traced the issue.

When I was logged out the sites were perfectly fine – only when logged in was I having trouble.

When I unchecked “Also optimise for logged in editors/ administrators?” – it resolved the issue. I have had this setting checked for years – but only in recent times it has caused this issue.
