WordPress creates link in comment

I am using WP 5.3.2. I noticed in a recent comment on a post that this string (below) was converted to a functioning URL in the comment although it has no protocol specifier:

Either WordPress or my theme is converting that to:

[ redundant link removed ]

Does anyone know if this is something WordPress is doing, or do I need to research it in the theme (that started as Underscores)? Or maybe it is the browser?

My goal is to modify my theme so that it does not do that. Thanks in advance any pointers as to where I should look next.
