“Cropped” featured image posts original

I’m sure this is incredibly basic, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what’s going on, and Google isn’t helping me find any info on this.

I tried setting a featured image to a post. No problem. Then I tried cropping the image. Also no problem. But then after saving it, the featured image remains the original.

Here’s the post I’m messing with:

The “same” image is in the photo gallery I set up — but there the cropping works:

When I go to my admin panel and look at the media library, it shows the original uncropped image, but when I try to edit it I can only edit the cropped version.

I’m very confused about what’s going on. And all Google searches produce answers about how to crop thumbnails, not about anything like this.

Yes, I saved changes to affect both the original image and the thumbnail. I’m following along with a tutorial that’s trying to demonstrate basic WordPress stuff to me, but the video tutorial just shows the cropping working as expected.

Help?
