Open registration – it’s dangerous or not?

I read that open registration on WP is dangerous for the site. Also, I read that a lot of WP sites use open registration and don’t have any problems.

So, where is a myth and where are facts? It’s worth it to use open registration on WP or no? Presently I have open registration and, of course, access to the admin panel is locked – I use Ultimate Member plugin.
