We currently have an OSCommerce solution that provides this functionality and we are at an impasse in completing project without this vital piece. Current Woo dev says its not possible and just wanted to check with others before we end of scrapping our efforts.

Direct from customer service folks:
Ability to see their cart in live time at any given time and b) we can add products to their cart that we have held back in buffer stock that’s not in “available to purchase” stock live on the website.
Our customers are mainly folks that struggle with online purchases and we have to hand hold a lot.
