I think maybe possibly there is a bug in… would have been 7.3.3 that might be leaving an extra space in the closing FilesMatch tag in the /wp-contents/uploads/.htaccess file.
I’m pretty cure I clicked a button to update a firewall rule on June 14 (thereby making it version 7.3.3) that broke all of the images on a multisite instance I manage. (It’s not an image-heavy site, so I only just went looking for the problem today.)
I was seeing this in my error logs:
[path to WP]/wp-content/uploads/.htaccess: </FilesMatch> directive missing closing '>'
and I found </FilesMatch > in the offending file. When I fixed it by hand, all was well.
Anyway, just wanted to pass that along in case anyone else runs into it.
