After serving me well for years, today I updated the plugin to version 5.1, and followed the “Validate Contact Form 7 Configuration” link. I believe that either the upgrade or the “validation” has now exposed my site (which has very little traffic) to a wave of contact form spam, which I did not have until the moment I took these actions today.
