Plugin breaks “S” query

Hi- I am trying to do a custom WP_Query in functions.php (unrelated to the ACF plugin), but when I use the “s” parameter, it does not return results. However, if I disable ACF better search, the query works as intended.

I need to use ACF better search for the general site search, and my custom query on a page/post specific filter, so I can’t just disable/remove the plugin.

Any ideas? thanks!
