Registration role random

I had a registration with only one role (subscriber) enabled on my site, yet it created users with random roles assigned (admin, none, translator, etc.). Currently I have the specified a role argument in the shortcode, but it still does not assign that role. (Side note: there’s no documentation about the role argument)
