In the plugin you said using async for jquery can “sometimes” work.
When i use async for jquery instead of defer my lazy loaded images display properly. No obvious page errors on all the major browsers from what i can see.
But…
When i fetch that page in webmaster tools, the Googlebot rendered page doesn’t show any images. The render next to it, what the user is supposed to see, also doesn’t show images. But it does when i view it in a browser.
The lazy plugin has a noscript tag for when javascript is disabled. When i exclude jquery in AO (without using this plugin), Googlebot renders the page correctly and displays the images.
Do you think it’s best to leave jquery excluded and keep it render blocking based on what Googlebot supposedly sees vs what i’m seeing?
